Stormrider review

July 20, 2024 - Reading time: ~1 minute - Category: reviews

Stormrider is an excellent conclusion to the Rigante series. If you've read this far, you know what to expect. This is prime Gemmell: fun, heroic characters (and some evil ones too), large-scale battles, and a classic good vs. evil plot with some nuance to it, though you know the good guys are always going to end up doing the right thing.

I've said it before, but I think Gemmell writes the best modern heroic fantasy. The plots aren't convoluted, the characters are pretty simple, and the books aren't literary masterpieces by any metric. But his books are always fun, well-written, and have quite a bit more emotional depth than you might expect from the blurb.

I'm not sure I liked the Rigante series as much as Gemmell's Greek trilogy I read recently, but it's close. I'm solidly a Gemmell fan now, that's for sure. Highly recommended for anyone who wants something a little different than what's currently popular in the genre.
