Another excellent entry in the Rigante series, and another point in Gemmell's favor as one of the best modern heroic fantasy authors.
Ravenheart is the 3rd book in the Rigante series, but is set roughly 800 years in the future from the first 2 novels and could ostensibly be read without reading the previous entries in the series, though you'd miss important background context and worldbuilding and I don't recommend it.
While I think I liked the earlier novels more than this one - those having better characters - I still really enjoyed this one. The main plot of the novel centers on a rather simple "noble underdog group struggles against evil oppressors" theme, but it's done well and Gemmell does a pretty good job of making some of the Varlish sympathetic while also showing that not all of the Rigante are noble good guys.
It's a pretty simple and straightforward plot, but there's nothing wrong with that. There's plenty of emotion and the characters are three dimensional and, for the most part, interesting.
I'm excited to end the series - it's been one of my favorites of the past few years and has helped solidify Gemmell as one of my favorite genre authors.
