Pumpkin Jack is a solid 3D platformer with a Halloween theme. It's got 6 distinct levels, each taking between 25-45 minutes, for roughly 4-6 hours of playtime. The platforming feels pretty good, and isn't terribly difficult. There are a few spots during tricky sections where the controls can be a little finnicky, and falling often results in insta-death which can be a little frustrating. Each level also has a separate minigame. These of our varying quality. Mostly they're fun. The cemetery level's is a bit annoying. It's a classic matching game where you match names on headstones. It's fine, and not hard, but required a tedious amount of trial and error compared to the rest of the game.
Each level also has a segment where control is taken away and you're on-rails just jumping and destroying obstacles, like riding a minecart or being flown around by a gargoyle. These sections are braindead easy, and are a bit too long for my liking. I imagine they were put in to break up the platform -> combat -> platform flow, but they were just a little too drawn out for me.
Speaking of combat, it's featured pretty heavily but still feels like a bit of an afterthought. It consists of attacking a few times, rolling away, waiting for the enemy's animation to end, and then attacking again. It's fine, but really simple. The game does give you a few different weapons to play with as you unlock levels, and they all feel distinct.
Pumpkin Jack's high points are in its atmosphere and humor. It nails the Halloween theme, the graphics look great and the use of color is excellent. The music doesn't stand out but is appropriately spooky. This game also isn't a horror a game. There's a lot of humor here, and I usually don't like a ton of humor in games but this one nails it. There's just the right amount of dialogue and quips and 4th wall breaking, and a lot of it is actually funny. Levels are broken up with short cutscenes where these dialogues play out, but it's kept to a minimum and I think that's a good thing for this type of game.
$30 is a bit high for a 3D platformer with only a few hours of content. I don't think I'd recommend this game at full price unless you're a huge fan of the genre, but if you can snag it at $15 or less it's definitely worth a play, especially in October.
