Dragon Ball vol 9 review

July 8, 2024 - Reading time: ~1 minute - Category: reviews

Another fun volume. I really like the enemy variety in Dragon Ball.

Z's enemies are more iconic, no doubt there, but the variety and goofiness of OG DB's enemies is really charming. Instead of a few major 'big bads' like Freeza and Cell, Dragon Ball features new enemies pretty much every volume. Characters like Dracula and the Devil don't get much time on screen, just a few pages each, but they're really well designed and fun.

Dragon Ball has such a whimsical and adventurous tone compared to the much more serious Z. The fights are lower stakes, the power levels less absurd, everything is a bit slower and less over the top. I wish Dragon Ball was more represented in the wider media universe, all the games and such focus on Z and Super, and the original Dragon Ball gets left behind a bit, which is a shame. I think there's a ton of potential for DB to get some more love, especially with Toriyama's passing.
