Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana

March 18, 2023 - Reading time: ~1 minute - Category: game library project

Jumping ahead a bit in the Ys series from the first two games, we now take a look at a much more recent game, Ys 8. This one uses a completely different style, being a 3D action game with a rock paper scissors party system.

Ys 8 is by far my favorite game in the series. It greatly expands the story elements we see in the 2D games, taking about 50 hours to complete. The combat is flashy, fast, and fun, with dozens of skills to make use of across a handful of different party members. The island setting is awesome, and exploring it was a real joy.

This game has a real shot at being in my top 5 games of all time. If you like action RPGs, even if you've never played Ys, you have to play this one. All Ys games except 1 and 2 are standalone so don't be worried by that "8" in the title.

Verdict: Finished
