I feel like I've said this about tons of game series, but in recent years Ys has become a top series for me. Ostensibly a JRPG, Ys has gone through several iterations across its 9 mainline games, featuring several different graphic and gameplay styles. Ys I and II are unique in that they feature a "bump" combat system.
Ys I is an old game. This PC version is a remaster of the PSP port, but the game originally released back in the late 80s and it shows. There's no attack button; to defeat enemies you simply run into them from advantageous angles - hitting them head-on will damage you. Graphics are simple, classic JRPG fare, but are serviceable. The soundtrack, as in all Ys games, is fantastic. Ys is known for its boss fights and this first game is no exception. It can be quite difficult, but grinding for just a level or two can make a massive difference and make the game much easier.
If you like JRPGs, especially action ones, you owe it to yourself to give Ys a try. The first two games aren't for everyone, but this first one is only a few hours long.
Verdict: Finished
