Psychonauts is a 2005 3D platformer from Double Fine. I've recently been watching the excellent documentary on the making of Psychonauts 2, and it's put me in a mood to play the original. While it definitely shows its age, it still holds up and is a fun play.
The game doesn't run incredibly well out of the box on modern systems, but a quick widescreen patch and running in Windows 95 compatibility mode seems to have fixed my issues. It has a ton of humor and a really unique design. The platforming still feels good, and it supports my Xbox controller natively, but the appeal of this game is the story and characters.
Sometimes I feel like I like the idea of Double Fine's games more than the games themselves. They just feel like a unique studio, and part of that is definitely the persona Tim Schafer puts forward. That said, Psychonauts is genuinely good and I'm probably going to keep playing it eventually, if only casually. No rush to beat this one. I'm throwing it in the "Play Later" pile for now.
Verdict: Play Later
