Max Payne isn't a series I've played in the past, but it's always been on my radar. With the news that the first game is being remade, I decided to take a look at the third game in the series, which is pretty standalone in terms of the story and developed by Rockstar.Every Rockstar game has a uniquely Rcokstar-ish feel to it, and this one is no exception. The movement and aiming systems are heavy, similar to GTA 4, and the bullet time feature will be familiar to anyone who played Red Dead. The gameplay is often interrupted by in-engine cutscenes, which are well-done and well-acted.
The gameplay is pretty simple, at least roughly a quarter through the game. You move through linear levels as enemies pop out at you, and you make use of mechanics to slow down time, dodge roll, utilize cover, and dual-wield weapons. It's very simple mechanically but it works well and is good fun. The story is pretty engaging as well.
For being over a decade old, the graphics hold up really well, the game runs well too. As it should.
The campaign here doesn't seem to be terribly long so I'll be finishing this one for sure.
Verdict: Keep Playing
