I'm always on the lookout for new tycoon games. I grew up playing RollerCoaster Tycoon, and while OpenRCT scratches that itch, I haven't really found a substitute for Zoo Tycoon, another favorite. Let's Build a Zoo has been on my radar for a long time, and was recently on sale, so I picked it up.
LBAZ definitely comes the closest of any game to Zoo Tycoon. All the mechanics are there - building enclosures, keeping them happy, managing staff and guest happiness. The pixel art is nice, but nothing outstanding. I'm having a good time after about 2 hours of play, and there's a nice little task system that helps provide some direction. One thing I've seen some reviews mention and I have some apprehension about is the breeding/gene splicing system. The game apparently has a system to merge together random animals, like ducks and snakes, and this plays a big role in progression. I haven't really made it far enough to explore that, but maybe something to watch out for if you're looking for strict realism.
Verdict: Timewaster
