As I said in my post on Minecraft Dungeons, I have zero nostalgia for Minecraft. I've always struggled with sandbox games. The lack of any kind of direction is off-putting to me, I need some sort of overarching goal to motivate me to keep playing a game. With that in mind, I've always kind of discarded DQ Builders 2 as a Minecraft clone.
I had the opportunity to pick it up for dirt cheap and decided to give it a try based on my fondness for Dragon Quest and the fact that reviews point towards this game leaning a little heavier on RPG mechanics and questing than on being a flat-out building sandbox. I've only played for a bit, maybe an hour, and I'm really glad I decided to give it a shot. The Dragon Quest monsters and music are as charming as ever, and there being missions and a main quest give me enough direction, so I feel like everything I'm doing means something.
DQ Builders 2 grabbed me in its first few minutes, and it's definitely near the top of my keep playing list for now. Maybe not as a "play immediately" game, but definitely one to turn on when I'm having trouble figuring out what to play, and will work great as a Timewaster game.
Verdict: Keep Playing/Timewaster
