Calling Dragon Age: The Veilguard divisive would be a massive understatement. This game is the long-awaited next entry in the popular Dragon Age series, and received really mixed reviews from players for being "woke" and a departure from the series' heavy RPG roots.
I've played for about 45 minutes, finishing the "set the stage" mission. I'm trying to evaluate the game without any bias, as I haven't really played any of the other entries. I played a bit of Origins a while back, but I don't have the attachment to it that some people do.
It seems okay so far. I know it's early, but the combat seems a little one-dimensional. Maybe it'll get more dynamic as I unlock more skills. The graphics are good. I haven't played far enough to get a handle on the story. Where the game is controversial is in it's dialogue. One of the most common criticisms of "woke" games is the idea that they have "Marvel" dialogue. This means there are a lot of quips and witty banter, with distinctly millennial humor, like something big happening and a character saying "so THAT just happened". I'm so used to it by now that it doesn't really bother me, but the ubiquity of it is a little tiresome.
This game seems fine, but I'm not sure it's gripping me enough for me to dive into another massive RPG right now. I'm throwing this one on the "come back later" pile.
Verdict: Maybe Revisit
